Since the launch of the Sekmai Artist Residency Program in early 2017 Gu Ying and Rania Ho have made multiple short-term visits to Dongguan over a span of 7 years. They have harbored an ongoing interest in the Sekmai space itself and its vicinity. It is an honor to relaunch the Dongguan Sekmai Space with the exhibition Translucent Yet Not Transparent by these two artists.

Gu Ying’s work is driven by her enduring curiosity with images and the realm of mixed reality. In this exhibition, she blends the visual language of snapshot photography with digital illustration, bringing the streets and alleys and the diverse members of society she encounters onto light boxes. The moments, reminiscent of glimpses through windows, evoke a sense of tranquility and serenity that runs parallel to life itself. The social significance of interpersonal communication and poignant messages of collective hardship are woven through each of Gu’s light boxes, which are placed throughout Sekmai’s three-story, former family home. At times the images interconnect, and at other moments, cast light on the intricate tapestry of human experience that surrounds us.

Rania Ho presents 4 works that explore the idea of ether – a hypothetically diffuse, invisible medium formerly thought to pervade space, transmit light, and conduct heat. The word ‘ether’ is used by different disciplines to describe vastly divergent ideas, from a specific chemical compound to the origin of the universe and more. The architecture and surrounding environment of the Sekmai Space all become part of these works, providing a base for experiencing that which may or may not be seen.

During the run of Translucent Yet Not Transparent, Beijing’s Wujin Café (co-founded by Rania Ho) will also present a Wujin Pop-up. Wujin is a café, and a platform for social and creative events. At Sekmai Space, the Wujin Pop-up will host a series of events: Tiny Space Concerts, Family Dinners, Sauna Days, and more. Events will be announced through Sekmai’s WeChat Channel. Please contact us for additional information and to make reservations.
